This past week has been a flurry of many happenings… firstly, that flurry does not include snow – we do miss that at this time of the year! Christmas without snow in the Caribbean deep south is quite different. One has to rely on the sounds of Christmas in carols and music, one such came by our Alexander home at 5:50 this AM…a music cart being pedalled. The hundreds of small shops on Regent and Robb streets display their versions of artificial Christmas trees and decorations – I think we will opt for ‘Fairy’ lights around the windows. I have also been crocheting ‘snowflakes’, ‘angels’ and ‘crosses’. Christmas cards are adorning our half wall room divider along with family pics. Our family will be in our hearts this year – we will miss our family traditional Boxing Day celebration in Pinawa with X-skiing, playing hockey/skating on the outdoor ice and a visit to the swinging bridge and of course turkey. Next year, God willing…
This Christmas day will see us in Calvary worshipping The Nativity of Our Lord at 7 h – we will then depart by cab for the Timehri docks for our boat trip up the Demerara to Mt. Zion at Sand Hills for a 11h Christmas Communion Carol Service. We should be home by 16h. No Christmas Eve services here – another thing we will miss, the Candlelight Carols.

The back seat is a rough ride we found out
Last Sunday was busy – following our morning worship here in Calvary we departed in the Ascension Lutheran bus for Williamsburg which is situated ~15 minutes from New Amsterdam about 2 hours from here. We travelled with 10 others to celebrate another anniversary – St. John’s Lutheran was celebrating their 55th Anniversary in that building. A grand event with many participants that ended the three hour service with a packaged meal for our return bus trip. We arrived safely home at 8:10 – tired but happy with the day.
It was also reassuring when our neighbours beside us in Christian Book Store phoned – “we were worried about you, we saw no lights!” We have developed many friends in our surroundings, in and outside the church.
We spoke of our added comforts last week… the security system is up and running, smoothly, except for yesterday when I pulled a faux pas at 4:30h and set of the alarm! Jolting Henry Bole and the neighbours I’m sure – but, the good of it – it works!
The dogs Rexy and Fluffy are grown up, lil Fluffy is very skinny, I’m determined to fatten her up AND also get her down to the SPCA to be neutered – we surely do not need anymore barking dogs around our neighbourhood.
I am also going to leave my mark in the way of gardening/plants, my sunflower seeds are growing – I am also planting Lavatera seeds Mildred – how will they grow? The banana tree that had been chopped down the day before our arrival had grown gigantically, see pic, to be chopped down again…its coming again, tropical growth is WOW!
Today Jack will hold his first Confirmation Class, the group has grown in numbers to six – isn’t it amazing how here the children/youth ask pastor… “may I be confirmed?” The ages will range from 12½ years to 18 – age difference does not make a ‘difference’ in Guyana.
Tomorrow will be another full day with services here in Calvary at 9h and then at 13h we will take a cab to King of Glory on the West Bank and then off to Para Fait Harmonie, a new mission church for service at 16 h. A new experience for us.
The parrots are squawking outside in the Coconut Palms – they come daily at this time in droves. I have sited many different birds this week sitting out on our balcony – by the way, we have our hammock up for added comfort. Who wants to try it out??
