Christmas in Georgetown Guyana has been an experience of activities for us - in the church - on the streets and just in preparation. For us in the church, we welcome the babe that God has sent to us as the most special of gifts. A Saviour indeed, has come into the world to save us...
On the streets - the hecticity of folk crowding the walkways to purchase items from the hundreds of street vendors - the City Mall a beehive of activity - the music blazing from the music carts ... Christmas / Holiday season is WOW!http://picasaweb.google.com/pitpat2/ChristmasBlog#
We have experienced a Christmas Candlelight dinner - a party with 150 children at King of Glory was so much fun, especially the Santa part - Christmas Day service at 7am at Calvary was then followed by our trip up the Demerara River, getting soaked by a torrential rain storm that had us sitting on the edge of our seats in a small wooden boat under umbrellas (Jack's turned inside out at the peak of the storm)! But, we did arrive safely at Sand Hills and Mt. Zion for their Christmas worship - Go tell it on the Mountain...
Today's worship was special in the celebration of a baptism - now preparations are being made for the traditional 'Old Year's Night' service at 11 hr on December 31st which will ring in the New Year at 12.
Old Year’ Night — an excerpt taken from a newspaper article
I attend church no more on Old Year’s Night because Old Year’s was never made a religious occasion in the first place. Also, many persons attend church under false pretences during this night. While there are many sincere believers, there are many more that use this night by attending church for all the wrong purposes and reasons. Take the last day of the last millennium (31-12-99) when all the churches were packed. Everyone was all hyped and scared about the Y2K Millennium bug and things of that sort. Nothing ever happened. Today, the churches are still packed, with mostly ‘strange’ attendees who do not really go to church during the year, but for some reason or another, see it fit to attend church on this night, maybe to ‘bribe’ the good Lord into giving them a good year.Don’t get me wrong; there are very sincere people who attend church on Old Year’s Night to praise and thank God for His blessings in the year past. They also want to spend the first minutes and seconds of the New Year with the Lord. And that is good.
